Our story began in the 1960s with Joe Bartolotta Sr. and his son, Joe Jr., who owned and operated Ply-Gems Home Remodeling Center in Saugus, Massachusetts. While Joe Jr. pursued his college education, he honed his entrepreneurial spirit and carpentry skills alongside his father. As the landscape of the lumber industry shifted with the expansion of larger retailers like Grossman’s Lumber, the Bartolottas sought new avenues. Leveraging their expertise in woodworking, they began crafting outdoor wood products – picnic tables, dog houses, swing sets, wishing wells, and glider swings – selling them directly from their storefront.

Recognizing the growing demand for their quality craftsmanship, they expanded their reach by establishing displays on lots along local highways. Initially, inventory was ingeniously stored in trailers, a practical solution that soon sparked a new idea. When local towns raised concerns about the temporary storage, the Bartolottas decided to build small storage sheds to house their products. It wasn’t long before customer inquiries shifted from the smaller items within the sheds to the sheds themselves. This pivotal moment marked the true birth of New England Outdoor.

Our journey began in a modest 4,500 sq. ft. facility on Canal Street in Lawrence, Massachusetts, where our largest shed was a compact 8×16. In 1998, driven by a need for greater space to accommodate our growing aspirations, we relocated to our current, expanded facility at 37 Oakland Avenue in Methuen, Massachusetts – a location with its own history as the former Foster Lumber.

Joe Jr. always envisioned his two sons joining the family business, a dream that has become a vibrant reality. Today, the day-to-day operations of New England Outdoor are expertly managed by Joe alongside his sons, Jonathan and Ryan Bartolotta. While the adage suggests that family businesses face unique challenges, we believe our shared values and deep-rooted commitment are the very essence of our enduring success.
