Storage sheds can be made from a variety of materials such as wood, metal, and plastic, each with its pros and cons. Wood sheds are of the strongest construction and make for a more secure storage solution. While plastic, particle board, and metal sheds may be a lot cheaper, you get what you pay for and these types of sheds do not offer much other than a roof and 4 walls for basic storage.
The size of the storage shed largely depends on its intended use and the available outdoor space. For smaller lawn and garden tools, a 6×6 or 8×8-sized shed will be plenty. For larger items like furniture, a 10×12 or 12×14 shed would be ideal. Make sure to consider the height of items you plan on storing when selecting the size for your new storage shed as you may want to add more headroom to your shed. If you plan on storing larger items like a riding lawnmower, snow blowers, bikes and ladders consider going a bit bigger.
There are many benefits to owning a storage shed. A shed can provide extra space for items that you may not need on a regular basis but don’t want to get rid of such as outdoor furniture and equipment, seasonal decorations, tools, sports equipment and more. It also helps keep your home organized and clutter-free while increasing the value of your property. Furthermore, it can provide a secure place to store items like lawnmowers and tools that may be at risk of theft if kept outdoors. A shed also offers an extra layer of security for your home since many burglars will target sheds in search of valuable items. If you are spending money each month on a self-storage, a shed may be a good idea to invest that money in something you own. Finally, a shed adds visual appeal to your property – creating an attractive outdoor space.
Keeping your wooden storage shed in good condition requires regular maintenance. Inspecting your sheds for signs of rot or decay and repairing any damaged parts as soon as they are detected is key to maintaining the lifespan of the shed. It’s also important to protect against moisture by ensuring proper drainage around the shed and keeping it clean from debris that could hold moisture. Additionally, regularly inspecting and tightening any hardware, painting and treating the wood to protect against rot, and using sealant or caulk around windows and doors will ensure your shed lasts for years to come.
Permit requirements for storage sheds vary by location, so it’s advisable to check local regulations. Generally, a permit is required if the shed is over a certain size or it’s placed on property near public roads. If you’re in doubt about permit requirements, contact your local building authority for clarification. If you have permitting questions, give us a call and we’ll do our best to help you find the information you need. We have installed sheds across the Northeast and can help you in the process.
It is important to have the right foundation in place prior to installation. Not having a proper foundation or base can cause problems later on down the road. The most common type of foundations are concrete slabs, gravel pads, and patio blocks. Each base has its benefits.
Contact us and we can help you decide which base is best for your particular installation.

Lexington, MA is a suburban town located just 10 miles north-west of Boston and is chalk full of history. Well known for the first shots fired of the American Revolutionary War- the Battle of Lexington where the “Shot heard ’round the world” became history and refers to the opening shot of the epic battles of Lexington and Concord, fought on April 19, 1775, which sparked the very beginning of the American Revolutionary War which led to the formation of the United States.
Although Lexington started as a farming community, providing produce for Boston, it had a boom of high-tech industry during the 60’s and 70’s with many tech companies still moving to Lexington today and has since created soaring property values via the combination of urban neighborhoods and massive job growth.
