We use high-quality Douglas Fir for all of our timber frame structures. We specifically select wood with the following specifications:

Grade: #1 or better – These are the timbers with the best structural integrity and minimal defects, for greater strength, durability, and visual quality.
Finish: S4S Smooth – Smooth, four-sides-surfaced lumber creates a clean, uniform look and reduces splinters, making the structure safer and more attractive.
Drying: Natural – We purchase our timbers green and air-dry them naturally for 3-6 months before processing them for use in a structure.
Cut: Free of Heart Center (FOHC) – Timbers cut from outside the heart center of a tree minimize internal stresses and checking (splitting), resulting in more stable, longer-lasting beams with a better appearance

Longer-lasting color retention
Reapply stain every 2-3 years on surfaces with the highest UV exposure.
The primary advantage of UTF is its superior UV protection. UTF is a two-coat stain process made of transparent acrylic stain containing transparent iron oxide pigments, which help shield the wood from UV damage. This makes UTF a high-end option for those particular about preserving the wood’s appearance over time.
If maintained regularly, UTF may only need to be reapplied on one or two sides of the timbers exposed to sunlight rather than on all timbers at once. The color deepens only slightly with each application.

Details:

Post stand-off brackets are always recommended if the post mounting locations are positioned below the patio surface. The goal is that the bottom of the posts are elevated slightly above the patio surface thus ensuring greater longevity for the structure.
- Example: a patio consisting of pavers with footers placed beneath the pavers.
- Post stand-off brackets are available in 2.5” and 4” to accommodate various patio scenarios.

Does New England Outdoor install fireplaces?

No, we primarily work with the customer’s mason/contractor.

Where should the chimney be placed?

The most popular location is in the center of the gable allowing the majority of the chimney to be visible from inside the pavilion. Typically, the chimney is placed immediately next to the outermost truss.

How tall does a wood-burning fireplace need to be?

If installed in the gable side it should be 3’ higher than the roof.
If installed in the eave side it should be 2’ higher than any part of the building that is within 10’.

Can I add rain gutters?

- The Timber Frame Pavilions can be modified to include fascia boards to accommodate standard house type 5k gutters.
- Alternatively, gutters can be added to a structure without fascia boards using specialized Roof Strap Hangers.
- Half-round gutters can be added without any modifications to the structure.

What’s Included:

Concealed Electrical Rough-In Wiring: Concealed channels along with durable 14-2 UF-B wiring designed for outdoor use.
Pre-Drilled Punch-Outs at electrical box locations:
- Includes a total of three punch-outs for receptacles, light switches, or junction boxes.
- One punch-out in the ridge beam for a drop-down wire—perfect for adding overhead lighting or a fan.

What’s Not Included:

Electrical boxes, light fixtures, and mounting hardware. These can be selected separately based on your preferred style and function.
This package is ideal for anyone looking to add lighting, fans, or power outlets to their pavilion. With the rough-in work already done, your electrician can complete the setup quickly and efficiently.
A Concealed Electrical Package is not recommended for commercial applications.
